Jaffa is one of the oldest ancient port cities in the world. Some people claim that Jaffa was named after Jephthah, one of Noah's three sons, who built the city 40 years after the biblical flood.

Jaffa is mentioned in the Book of Joshua as a city in the territory of the tribe of Dan, and for that reason the coastal plain is called Gush Dan. Many descendants of Dan lived along the coast, building ships and fishing.
